Montpelier – Educator Tracey Witherspoon has joined the board of the Public Assets Institute.

A nonpartisan nonprofit in Montpelier, Public Assets is Vermont’s independent research organization on state budget, tax, and economic issues and the source for timely and in-depth state fiscal and policy analysis.

Tracey is a 26-year educator at Twinfield Union School, a pre-K—12 school in Plainfield, VT. She teaches social studies and directs Renaissance, the personalized Twinfield learning program for high school students. Renaissance enhances the curriculum in the small, rural high school, providing opportunities for all students to design challenging, in-depth, standards-based studies based on individual interests and learning styles. Her creativity and dedication have made a positive impact on generations of Vermont students.

“Tracey’s expertise and first-hand understanding of what’s working and what’s not within our public education system are vital additions to the board,” said Board Chair Jared Duval. “At a time when public education—our most essential public good—is under threat, her work to protect the integrity of public education in Vermont is invaluable.”

Added Witherspoon: “I’m delighted to join the board at Public Assets. I’m inspired by people and organizations that strive to create a more just world, and who believe, as I do, that local schools are essential to resilient, connected communities.”

Tracey is a Canadian from Northwestern Ontario, and has lived in Vermont since 1997. She earned a BA in Political Science from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and completed her master’s in Education at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. She has worked and traveled in the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East and South Korea. She and her husband live in Marshfield, VT where they raised their three children. She serves as a trustee for the Jaquith Public Library, is a member of the Marshfield Resilience Hub, and Vermont School Workers United.
