Family Income Rose in 2011
Vermont median family income—half of families earn more than the median and half earn less—rose 2.9 percent in 2011, according to the latest data from the Vermont Tax Department. But the change in median income varied from town to town. In a quarter of Vermont towns, the median family income went down, while three-quarters of the towns saw increases.
Although median family income for the state rose in 2011, it was still lower than it had been a decade earlier, if inflation is taken into account. Median family income in 2011 was $59,315; adjusted for inflation, median family income in 2001 was $60,071.
The Tax Department data is based on adjusted gross income reported on tax returns filed by married couples, civil union couples, and single parents with children.
